Occupational Therapy Assessments, Support and Treatment

Early intervention screening

(0 months – 2 years)

The early intervention screening consists of a 15 minute parent / caregiver interview where background information, medical history and main concerns are discussed.

During a 30 minute physical assessment, developmental milestone charts will be used to obtain information on normal movement patterns, reflex activity, regulation, social interaction.

The therapist will compile a screening summary on findings within 5 working days which will be sent via email to the parents / family / caregivers. The summary will include recommendations for further assessment or therapy as well as home support strategies if needed.

Baby Assessment

(0 – 12 months)

The baby assessment consists of a 15 to 30 minute parent / caregiver interview where background information, medical history and main concerns are discussed.

During a 45 minute physical assessment, standardized and non-standardized assessments and developmental milestone charts will be used to obtain information on normal movement patterns, reflex activity, regulation, social interaction, age appropriate basic abilities, feeding, etc.

The therapist will compile a report on the assessment findings within 7 working days. The report will include the infants’ strengths/needs and recommendations for therapy as well as home support strategies for the interim.

The report will be discussed with the family / parents / caregivers in a follow up feedback session of 15 to 30 minutes. During the feedback session the parents / family / caregivers will have opportunity to identify main objectives and goals for therapy with guidance from the therapist. Future therapy will be discussed, and resources will be recommended.

Toddler Assessment

(1 year – 3 years)

The toddler assessment consists of a 15 to 30 minute parent / caregiver interview where background information, medical history and main concerns are discussed.

During a 90 minute physical assessment, standardized and non-standardized assessments and developmental milestone charts will be used to obtain information on normal gross and fine motor movement patterns, visual motor abilities, reflex activity, regulation, social interaction, play, personal independence participation such as feeding, dressing, toileting and grooming and behaviour etc.

The therapist will compile a report on the assessment findings within 7 working days. The report will include the toddlers’ strengths/needs and recommendations for therapy as well as home support strategies for the interim.

The report will be discussed with the family / parents / caregivers in a follow up feedback session of 15 to 30 minutes. During the feedback session the parents/family/caregivers will have opportunity to identify main objectives and goals for therapy with guidance from the therapist. Future therapy will be discussed, and resources will be recommended.

Pre-schooler Assessment

(3 years – 6 years)

The pre-schooler assessment consists of a 15 to 30 minute parent / caregiver interview where background information, medical history and main concerns are discussed.

During a 120 minute physical assessment, standardized and non-standardized assessments and developmental milestone charts will be used to obtain information on normal gross and fine motor movement patterns, visual perceptual abilities, visual motor abilities, regulation, social interaction, play, personal independence participation in activities such as feeding, dressing, toileting, bathing and grooming, scholastic and pre academic abilities (writing, scissoring, drawing, basic concepts), behaviour, age appropriate executive functioning abilities etc.

The therapist will compile a report on the assessment findings within 7 working days. The report will include the pre-schoolers’ strengths/needs and recommendations for therapy as well as home support strategies for the interim.

The report will be discussed with the family / parents / caregivers in a follow up feedback session of 15 to 30 minutes. During the feedback session the parents / family / caregivers will have an opportunity to identify main objectives and goals for therapy with guidance from the therapist. Future therapy will be discussed, and resources will be recommended.

Child Assessment

(7 years – 12 years)

The child assessment consists of a 15 to 30 minute parent / caregiver interview where background information, medical history and main concerns are discussed.

During a 120 to 180 minute physical assessment, standardized and non-standardized assessments and developmental milestone charts will be used to obtain information on normal gross and fine motor movement patterns, visual perceptual abilities, visual motor abilities, regulation, social interaction, play and recreation, personal independence participation in activities such as feeding, dressing, toileting, bathing and grooming, scholastic and academic abilities (writing, scissoring, drawing, basic concepts, comprehension, reading, math skills), behaviour, age appropriate executive functioning abilities, study techniques etc.

The therapist will compile a report on the assessment findings within 7 working days. The report will include the child’s strengths/needs and recommendations for therapy as well as home support strategies for the interim. The report will be discussed with the family / parents / caregivers in a follow up feedback session of 15 to 30 minutes.

During the feedback session the parents/family/caregivers will have opportunity to identify main objectives and goals for therapy with guidance from the therapist. Future therapy will be discussed, and resources will be recommended.

Teenager Assessment

(12 years – 18 years)

The teenager assessment consists of a 15 to 30-minute parent / caregiver interview where background information, medical history and main concerns are discussed.

During a 120 to 180 minute physical assessment, standardized and non-standardized assessments and developmental milestone charts will be used to obtain information on normal gross and fine motor movement patterns, visual perceptual abilities, visual motor abilities, regulation, social interaction, recreation, personal independence participation in activities such as feeding, dressing, toileting, bathing and grooming, scholastic and academic abilities (writing, comprehension, reading, math skills), behaviour, age appropriate executive functioning abilities, study techniques and appropriate life skills such as conflict management, self-assertiveness etc.

The therapist will compile a report on the assessment findings within 7 working days. The report will include the teenagers’ strengths/needs and recommendations for therapy as well as home support strategies for the interim.

The report will be discussed with the family / parents / caregivers in a follow up feedback session of 15 to 30 minutes. During the feedback session the client / parents / family/caregivers will have opportunity to identify main objectives and goals for therapy with guidance from the therapist. Future therapy will be discussed, and resources will be recommended.

School and community visits

Occupational therapy follows a holistic approach and therefore support their clients in all areas and settings where functional participation in daily life is required.

During all assessments the client’s participation in their daily life settings will be explored. Occasionally the therapist might require more information to identify areas of need and might be required to consult with the client’s teachers, tutors or sport coaches to develop a clear picture on areas of need.

Whenever a school or community visit is required, the therapist will arrange with the parents / family / caregivers accordingly and the costs involved will be discussed.

Parent education and support

All assessments include a feedback session where goal / objectives and therapy are discussed. During the initial feedback session, the parents / family / caregivers will be educated in the basic therapy needs, handling and support. Each therapy session will also include a 5 to 10-minute contact session between the therapist and the parents/family/caregivers where improvement, new strategies and home activities will be discussed.

Occasionally parents / family / caregivers / teachers / coaches will need needs specific education in handling and special strategies. This will be discussed during the initial feedback session and can be arranged. Costs involved will be discussed.

Treatment sessions

Typical occupational therapy treatment sessions might vary from client to client.

However, sessions can be 30 minutes to 180 minutes, depending on the diagnosis and the clients’ endurance and ability to maintain focus.

Treatment session will always include a 5 to 10-minute interaction between the parents / family / caregivers and the therapist to share improvement, concerns and future strategies as well as home activities.

You and your child’s occupational therapy journey is only a phone call or email away. During your first contact, you will be required to provide us with a contact number and an email address.

You will be provided with a telephonic consult date and time, where the therapist will call you back and provide you with a 10-minute free consult. During this consult, the therapist will be able to determine which assessments your child will need.

You will also receive a questionnaire via email. Please complete the questionnaire and if possible please send it back to the therapist before the assessment date. This questionnaire will provide valuable information and save time during the initial assessment and interview.

On the day of assessment, please ensure that your child wears comfortable clothes, had a good night’s rest and had a snack before the assessment session. During longer assessments, it is recommended that you pack a small snack for a quick brain break during the session.
